Finding Safe and Affordable Childcare Far from Home

childcare of military families

In many cultures around the world, raising a child is a community effort. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, and neighbors are always there to hold the baby, cook a meal, or watch the kids while you work. When you move to a new country as a military spouse, you lose that built-in childcare village. Finding someone you trust to watch your children—and finding care that you can actually afford—can be a massive source of stress and isolation.

On-Base Childcare Options The military understands this challenge and has created a massive childcare system to help families. Your first option is usually the Child Development Center (CDC). The CDC is a large daycare facility located directly on the military base. It is highly regulated, very safe, and the teachers are well-trained. The best part about the CDC is that the cost is based on your total family income. If your family makes less money, you pay less for childcare.

However, because the CDC is safe and affordable, there is often a very long waiting list. You should put your child on the waitlist as soon as you find out you are moving to a new base—even if you are pregnant!

If the CDC is full, the next option is Family Child Care (FCC). These are military spouses who are approved to watch a small group of children inside their own base housing. They undergo strict background checks, home inspections, and training by the military. Many families prefer FCC because it offers a smaller, more home-like environment for their children.

Off-Base Childcare and Fee Assistance If you cannot find childcare on the military base, you will have to look at daycares in the local civilian town. In the United States, civilian daycare can be incredibly expensive, sometimes costing as much as rent!

Do not panic. The military has a program called Fee Assistance (often managed by an organization called Child Care Aware). If there is no room for your child on the base, the military will actually help pay a portion of your civilian daycare bill. The goal is to make your off-base daycare cost the same amount as it would if your child was at the CDC.

Drop-in and Hourly Care Sometimes you do not need full-time daycare; you just need a few hours to go to a doctor's appointment or get a haircut. The CDC often offers "Hourly Care," where you can pay by the hour, but you must reserve it in advance. You can also look for teenagers or other spouses on base to babysit. Never be afraid to ask another spouse, "What babysitters do you recommend?" Word-of-mouth is the safest way to find someone trustworthy.

Helpful Resources:

  • MilitaryChildCare.com: This is the absolute first place you should go. It is the official Department of Defense website where you register your child for on-base childcare waitlists globally.

  • Child Care Aware of America (Fee Assistance): The organization that handles the paperwork if you need the military to help pay for an off-base civilian daycare.

  • Sittercity: An online platform to find local babysitters and nannies. The Department of Defense often partners with Sittercity to offer free premium memberships for military families.

  • Base CDC / Youth Center: Visit them in person to ask about hourly care punch cards and Parents' Night Out programs.
